Snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails....

Last night, I nearly ran over a puppy.

But I didn't. I stopped in time, put on my blinkers and got out to have a look at the wee fella. Oh, you've never seen anything like it in your life. He was a little beagle x terrier puppy and he looked so tiny, cold and bedraggled. The minute I opened the car door, and made some encouraging noises, he shot over to me and leapt into the car and sat there shaking. It made my heart melt, I swear to you. So I brought him inside and introduced him to my giant of a greyhound while I tried to get hold of his owners.

Well, the sight of the two of them together was like nothing you've ever seen. My giant greyhound is a deeply soppy and amenable sort of dog but having never seen non-greyhound dogs until we got him, isn't the most socialised dog in the world but he's getting quite good. Well the dog and the puppy got on like a house on fire, playing together, chasing each other round the house and for a wee moment, they actually lay down together ... well that was before the puppy used my dog's head as a springboard to vault over the back of the sofa. I've never seen the dear old thing quite so happy, wagging his tail and looking at the pup like he was a long lost friend.

He looked utterly woeful when the pups' owners came to pick him up. I think I did too. I have resolved to get another dog once the move is complete. I can tell I'll be 'the lady with the dogs', but no matter. The sight of the pair of them last night was more than enough to melt the heart of even the most hard-hearted person.

I don't think the "dog-lady" tag has the same connotations as the "cat-lady" tag. In fact, I think I'd quite like to be a dog-lady. I can see me with a barabour coat, hiking through countryside with a couple of dogs bouncing around in the field... and I can see you in the same set-up!

The thing is, I'm slightly worried that I could all too easily become a one-woman animal sanctuary. I'm just a sucker for any kind of animal ... horses, goats, donkeys, dogs ...
